Understanding Vertigo and Balance

Your balance system relies on your inner ear working like a carpenter’s spirit level. Inside the ear canals, there are tiny crystals (otoconia) that tell your brain where your head is in space.

Sometimes, these crystals can become dislodged and move into the wrong part of the ear. This sends false signals to your brain, causing intense dizziness or the sensation that the world is spinning around you. This condition is known as BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo).

Your Road to Recovery

We understand that vertigo can be frightening and debilitating. Our goal is to diagnose the issue quickly and provide immediate treatment.

1. Detailed Assessment

Will or Urvi will perform a thorough evaluation of your eye movements and balance reflexes. We use specific diagnostic tests (such as the Dix-Hallpike test) to identify exactly which ear canal is affected.

2. Repositioning Manoeuvres

If you have BPPV, we use specific head movements to guide the crystals back to their correct position. You may have heard of the Epley Manoeuvre, the Semont Manoeuvre or the BBQ Roll. These are gentle, hands-on techniques performed by your therapist on the treatment bed.

3. Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)

For conditions other than BPPV, or to prevent recurrence, we design a bespoke exercise programme. This may include:

  • Gaze Stability Exercises: Teaching your eyes to stay focused while your head moves.
  • Balance Training: Strengthening your core, hips and ankles to improve stability.
  • Habituation Exercises: Gradually exposing you to movements that cause dizziness to desensitise the brain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does it work?
For BPPV, results can be dramatic. Many patients experience significant relief after just one or two sessions of the Epley manoeuvre. However, if your balance issues are chronic or related to a concussion, rehabilitation may take a course of several sessions to fully resolve.
During the assessment and positioning manoeuvres, we do need to reproduce your symptoms to treat them. This means you might feel a brief moment of dizziness during the session. However, this is necessary to clear the problem, and you should feel significantly better afterwards.
We recommend getting a lift to your first appointment if you are currently experiencing active vertigo. Treatment can sometimes leave you feeling a little tired or momentarily off-balance immediately after the session.
No. As private practitioners, Will and Urvi can assess and treat you directly. If we suspect your dizziness is caused by a non-vestibular medical issue, we will refer you to your GP for further investigation.
