Slipped Discs Don’t Actually Slip!

I WILL LOOK FOR YOU I WILL FIND YOU 1

The thing about discs is – they don’t slip!

Have you ever heard the phrase “Slipped Disc” and worried that that’s what’s causing your back pain? So then you’re too scared to see someone as they might tell you that you’re right, and frankly that sounds terrifying?! The thing is, you can’t actually “slip” a disc. Spinal discs are firmly attached between your vertebrae and don’t just slip out of place.

What this phrase usually means is either:

  • A disc herniation – when the soft inner part bulges out and presses on nerves
  • Degenerative disc changes – age-related thinning of the discs, narrowing the gaps between vertebra and again causing pressure on the nerves
  • Annular tears – small tears in the outer disc layer causing pain

Whilst these issues are a little different to the connotations that hearing ‘slipped disc’ springs to mind, ignoring them can result in;

Ongoing pain & sciatica

🧍‍♂️ Stiffness & loss of mobility

⚠️ Nerve damage

🔁 A cycle of flare-ups

🧠 Reduced activity & long-term impact

So, why should you treat a Bulging Disc or Back Pain?

1. Reduce Pain: targeted treatment reduces nerve pressure and inflammation, so you feel better, faster.
2. Regain Strength & Mobility: treatment restores flexibility, posture, and core control so you can move freely & confidently.
3. Prevent Recurrence: strengthening and education help stop the cycle of flare-ups and future injuries.
4. Avoid Chronic Pain, Injections and Surgery: early treatment reduces the risk of long-term nerve damage and the need for invasive procedures.
5. Quality of Life: feel stronger, more in control, and ready to return to work, sport, and life.

“Up to 80% of adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives — but only 10% seek professional help.”

And how can you resolve back pain?

1. 🧍‍♂️ Keep Moving. Gentle movement keeps your spine mobile and prevents stiffness.
2. 🏋️‍♀️ Strengthen Core & Glutes. Tailored exercises support your spine and reduces strain on painful areas.
3. 🧠 Manage Stress. Stress and tension can worsen pain so try relaxation techniques like breathing, meditation, or walking.
4. 💆‍♂️ Hands-On Treatment. Manual therapy, electrotherapy, acupuncture and taping can reduce inflammation, relieve tight joints & muscles, and restore movement.
5. 🎯 Fix the Cause — Not Just the Symptoms. A proper assessment identifies the real cause of your pain (posture, weakness, lifting habits, etc.), helping to stop it coming back.

Back pain is common — but not normal. Don’t wait for it to become a long-term problem. Early treatment leads to faster recovery and less chance of chronic pain.
